PEREMPUAN

Run time: 8 minutes

Role: Producer, Director, Editor, Cinematographer

SYNOPSIS: In the remote Fam Islands of Indonesia, illegal and unregulated commercial fishing devastated the coral reefs around Pam Village in the 1990s, with local fishermen reporting a 90 percent decline in their catch. When the community declared a marine protected area in 2017, the women of Pam Village refused to be sidelined — pushing back against resistance from their own community to form the first women's ocean patrol. Perempuan — the Indonesian word for "woman" — follows their fight to prove they are far more than housewives, earning their place as guardians of the sea. Now, they are building their own enterprises, producing coconut oil and coconut soap to fund ocean protection and secure their families' futures.
